Objective

To Promote the use of Maps, Earth Observation and create awareness of the data sharing geoportals and observatories to allow users to discover GIS datasets and creatively use them to develop innovative solutions.

Award Prizes

The applicable entries can be anything relating to Environmental and Biodiversity Conservation Efforts that seeks to protect or create awareness to our Natural Resources. Entries along these topics are eligible: Forestry, Protected Areas, National Parks, Conserved Areas, Plants, Species, Wildlife, Fisheries, Wetlands, Marine, Coastal Information, Blue Economy etc. Below are the award prizes in the various categories:

  • School Category (Per School Award)
    • Primary School (Euros 2,000)
    • High School (Euros 2,000)
  • Professional Category (Individual Award)
    • Land Theme (Euros 2,000)
    • Marine Theme (Euros 2,000)
  • Overall Winner (Euros 4,000)
    • The winner will be voted by people based on the 3 best entries of the four sub categories mentioned above as identified by the Judges.

Judging Criteria

A map is a representation or drawing of the earth's surface or a part of its area drawn on a flat surface. All categories should ensure their submissions are aligned with theme i.e.; Environmental and Biodiversity Conservation Efforts To Protect our Natural Resources.

  • School Category (Team Submission)
    • Map Centric - This should be a drawing or painting that illustrates the theme for example to show the amazing variety of life on the planet, the richness of ecosystems, the reasons why the environment & biodiversity is being lost, the things people are doing to protect or spoil them. (25 marks)
    • Visual Appeal - Effective use of colors, coordination, harmony and their relations among the various elements illustrated in the map elements. Participants are encouraged to make their submission colorful using Paint, Colored pencil, ink, collage, pastel, crayons, etc. Computer generated graphics are not allowed. (25 marks)
    • Creativity and Innovative - Use your imagination to come up with something truly unique, creative, innovative and self explanatory. The minimum size of the paper should A4 paper size. (25 marks)
    • Effective communication - The submission should be easy to understand, concise, effectively presented and should be an original. Details of the participants such as school details should not be included in the drawing or painting. (25 marks)
  • Professional Category (Individual Submission)
    • Map Centric - Exploration, analysis, and presentation of a geographic phenomenon with clear focus on a specific topic, question, story line, awareness or problem solution related to the theme. (20 marks)
    • Visual Appeal - Effective use of colors, coordination, harmony and their relations among the various elements illustrated in the map elements. This includes color coordination, use of symbology, grammar, punctuation, spelling and good cartography. (20 marks)
    • Design Layout - logical organization and visual flow of maps, text and graphic. Legibility of text font, text size, figures, tables, popups, videos & graphics (20 marks)
    • Effective communication - The submission should be easy to understand, concise, effectively presented and should be an original (20 marks)
    • Effective use of Geographic Information - appropriate use and portrayal of spatial data from at least 2 data sources listed in this page and complete documentation (20marks)

The intellectual property of the entries is owned by the participants., however, the organizers, have the right to publish, exhibit, print or distribute the entries through any media.

All submitted entries must use at least two datasets from any of the above named data sources. Other data sources may be used as well.
